Walking in Your Inheritance

Have you ever thought about what it would be like when your life on Earth comes to an end and you go home to be with the Lord? Just as an earthly father leaves his children and inheritance, our heavenly Father gives His children an inheritance as well. In this discussion, we will address the inheritance we receive as a believer, what limits you from walking in your inheritance, and what spiritual inheritance (legacy) will you leave for your generations.

1 Peter 1:3-5 ESV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

The inheritance is promised, but not to everyone. The eternal life with God is for those who hear the truth, believe in Jesus, repent of their sin, and receive the Holy Spirit. Your inheritance begins upon the time of salvation. I want to take a moment and explain what salvation means. Maybe this is your first time hearing of this. Salvation is when you put your faith in Jesus Christ that he is the Son of God, repent of your sin and ask Jesus to come into your heart and be your Lord and Savior. You now have become a joint-heir with Christ and have entered into your inheritance.

Galatians 4:4-7 NIV
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Are you getting excited knowing what all the Lord has bestowed upon those who believe? Since we are joint-heirs with Christ, we share in His life example. We die to sin and our old selves and rise to a new life in Him and have fellowship with the Father. Although we have an inheritance when we go to Heaven, we can experience a portion of it while we are here on Earth. The Holy Spirit is a guarantee of our inheritance. Given to lead and guide us in our walk through our faith and obedience to serve the Lord.

Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV

In him, you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

When you are walking in accord with the Holy Spirit, you are obedient to the nine fruits of the Spirit

.

Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

I encourage you to seek God and develop a relationship with Him. Set aside time every morning to spend with Him. Get to know who you are in Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. Walking in your inheritance is the true meaning of living a Christian life. In sharing in His sufferings, we will also share in His inheritance. What belongs to Jesus belongs to us as children of God.

What limits you from walking in your inheritance?
Our inheritance is the Land of Promise. Yet many believers choose to stay wandering in the wilderness, dragging their cross weighed down from their burdens. Burdens never intended for them to carry. Are you limiting a limitless God? Are you allowing fear, unforgiveness, rebellion, or disobedience to keep you complacent? Many believers are walking around miserable, sick, and inadequate when they are heirs of God. Don't allow that to control you, which Jesus already conquered on the cross. It is time to arise, cross over into your inheritance and live the life Jesus died to give you.

Colossians 3:23-24 NIV
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

What kind of legacy are you leaving behind?

Proverbs 13:22 NKJV
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children....--

Have you thought about how you want to be remembered? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Will it be imperishable or eternal? An inheritance is not limited to money, land, cars, or material belongings. It also includes godly character like faith, integrity, trustworthiness, and wisdom. Your legacy begins in your heart, in your relationship with God.

Psalm 112:1-2 NKJV

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.

When there is no testimony of God's goodness from the prior generation to the next, a person is left searching in the dark, trying to find their way. As parents, we are responsible for teaching our children about God and salvation through Jesus Christ. If we don't teach our children the right way, the world will teach them the wrong way.
Take an assessment of your life. As long as you have breath, there is still time to change your legacy. Your inheritance with God is worth more value than any earthly inheritance.
